Bottle API Documentation Full reference

Plant care API

A plant finder that returns plants matching growing criteria, care guidance by plant type, and a stored collection so an application can keep track of which plants a particular user actually owns.

This is the same API the Aqua Botany plant monitoring product runs on, which is worth knowing for what it implies about the rest of the platform: the soil moisture, hardiness zone, seasonal advice and air quality endpoints were built for the same use case and are documented alongside these.

Endpoints

6 endpoints. Request and response examples for each one are in the full reference.

Where the data comes from

Growing conditions for a location The hardiness zone, soil and weather endpoints documented elsewhere in this reference

Getting started

Every endpoint is JSON over HTTPS and takes one API key in an x-api-key header. There is no SDK to install and no OAuth dance.

curl "https://api.aquabotany.com/v1/plants/tips?plant=succulent" \
  -H "x-api-key: $BBL_API_KEY"

Quickstart, authentication and errors and rate limits are documented in the reference. Keys are issued from the Bottle Blue dashboard.

Common questions

Does this API identify a plant from a photo?

No. There is no image recognition on this platform. The plant finder matches on growing criteria you supply, and the care endpoints take a plant type by name.

What is stored in a plant collection?

The plants an individual account has added, in that account's own partition. It is a straightforward create, read, update and delete surface, and it is scoped to the caller rather than shared.

Can I get the growing conditions for a location too?

Yes, from neighbouring endpoints rather than these. Hardiness zone lookup and seasonal advice sit with the weather endpoints, and soil composition, soil moisture and air quality sit with the environment endpoints. All take a coordinate.
