Bottle API Documentation Full reference

Congressional trading and government data API

Nine datasets built from United States government disclosure filings, served as JSON over HTTPS with a single API key. Congressional stock trades by chamber, lobbying registrations, federal contract awards, corporate insider filings, quarterly institutional holdings, off-exchange volume, and a daily ranking of politician portfolios marked to market.

The distinction worth understanding before you compare options: these are read from the offices that publish the filings, not bought from an aggregator and passed along. Bottle Blue moved off its last commercial data vendor on 2026-08-18 for exactly that reason. Every source below is the originating publisher.

Getting started

Every endpoint is JSON over HTTPS and takes one API key in an x-api-key header. There is no SDK to install and no OAuth dance.

curl "https://api.bottlebluellc.com/v1/government/congress?year=2026" \
  -H "x-api-key: $BBL_API_KEY"

Quickstart, authentication and errors and rate limits are documented in the reference. Keys are issued from the Bottle Blue dashboard.

Common questions

Where does the congressional trading data come from?

Directly from the two offices that receive the filings: the Senate's Electronic Financial Disclosure system and the House Clerk's financial disclosure index, including the e-filed periodic transaction report PDFs. Nothing in this dataset is relayed through a commercial aggregator.

How current is it?

It is as current as the filings themselves, which is the real constraint on every provider of this data. The STOCK Act allows a member of Congress up to 45 days to disclose a transaction, so a trade reaching the API today may have been executed weeks earlier. Collection runs on a schedule and new filings appear after the next run.

What is the politician portfolio leaderboard?

A daily build that reconstructs each politician's book from their own disclosed trades and marks it to market, then ranks the results. Because disclosure reports a dollar range rather than an exact amount, every figure it produces is an estimate derived from those ranges. It is not a reported return, and it should not be read as one.

Which chambers and datasets are covered?

The dataset parameter accepts congress, senate, house, lobbying, contracts, off-exchange, insiders, wsb and 13f-changes. Separate routes serve the daily leaderboard and a single politician's current positions.

What does it cost to use?

The government datasets sit behind the same single API key as the rest of the Bottle API, metered per plan. See the pricing and rate limit sections of the full reference for the current tiers.
